Searching

To search the database, select criteria from the navigation bar on top of the page.

Any of the criteria on the bar may be crossed with any other to refine the search while the History file records all of the queries and their combinations.

History file

A search consists of one or more queries posed to the whole database in order to select relevant records.

When an query is made, the results and the query itself are stored in the History file. As the search criteria are further refined, new results are automatically calculated within the file using all the selected criteria.

The History file has two functions:

  • It lists all the criteria that have been selected since the beginning of the search;
  • It combines the partial results into a single global result.

All the active criteria, designated with checkmarks, are automatically included in the calculation of the current result. Remove a criterion by unchecking it and pressing the "Recalculate" button.

To reset the History file for a new search, click the "New Search" button.

Combining criteria

Criteria are combined using the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT. Click the "Combine" button and enter the desired combinations.

Examples :

  • Q1 OR Q2
  • Q2 NOT Q1

The criteria available are detailed below.

Word searches within fields

Enter one or more words, then select the relevant responses on the intermediary list before confirming the search.

Words may be truncated using the asterix (*) at the beginning or end. Truncation on the right is activated by default for Modern Authors and Ancient Authors and Texts.

This applies to the following :

  • Modern authors;
  • Ancient authors and texts;
  • Festschriften (accessible in the Subjects and Disciplines table beginning with volume 67);
  • Personalia (accessible in the Subjects and Disciplines table beginning with volume 67);
  • Periodicals;
  • Division titles;

Word searches on the whole text

It is possible to search the entire contents of the database using whole words or words truncated with the asterisk (*) at the beginning or end.

This applies to the following:

  • The whole text;
  • Word(s) in titles;
  • Publisher;
  • Collection.

Searching within modern languages

To limit results to works in one or more modern language, choose the criterion "Language," then select the relevant languages and click the "search" button.

Searching a multi-level list

The table of contents of the APh has more than one level. Select a division by checking it, then refine the search by clicking "+" to unfold the next level. This process can be repeated.

Please note: Opening a lower level closes the levels above it and automatically annuls any selections made at those levels.

This applies to the following :

  • Subjects and disciplines – before volume 67;
  • Subjects and disciplines – beginning with volume 67;
  • Catalogs of manuscripts (accessible in Subjects and Disciplines – beginning with volume 67);
  • Catalogs of museums, of collections and of exhibitions (accessible in Subjects and Disciplines – beginning with volume 67);
  • Sites (accessible in Subjects and Disciplines – beginning with volume 67).

Searching by date

It is possible to search edited works by year or over a range of years using one of four options :

  • Search on an exact date;
  • Search before a date;
  • Search after a date;
  • Search between two dates.

Choose one of the four options, enter the year or range of years, then press the "Seach" button.
